🚨 URGENT: AI Voice Scam Targeting Grandparents

🔴 Critical 📅 April 29, 2026

⚠️ What You Need to Know Right Now

Scammers are using computers to COPY voices from videos on Facebook, TikTok, and other sites. They then call grandparents pretending to be grandchildren in trouble.

This is happening TODAY. People are losing their life savings.

🎭 How This Scam Works

Step 1: Scammers Steal a Voice

  • They find a video of your grandchild on Facebook, TikTok, or Instagram
  • They use AI (computer software) to copy that voice perfectly
  • It sounds EXACTLY like your grandchild

Step 2: The Distress Call

Your phone rings. A crying voice says:

“Grandma? It’s me. I’m in trouble. I got in a car accident and I’m in jail. I need $5,000 for bail. Please don’t tell Mom and Dad - they’ll be so disappointed in me.”

The voice sounds exactly right. It IS your grandchild’s voice.

Step 3: Pressure and Secrecy

  • They say it’s URGENT - money needed in hours
  • They tell you NOT to tell anyone
  • They hand the phone to a “lawyer” or “police officer” who sounds official
  • They demand payment by wire transfer, gift cards, or Bitcoin

Step 4: The Money Is Gone

Once you send money, it’s sent overseas and cannot be recovered. The “grandchild” was never in trouble. It was all fake.

🚫 Red Flags - STOP if You Hear These

  • “Don’t tell Mom/Dad” - Real emergencies don’t require secrecy
  • “I need money RIGHT NOW” - Urgency is a scammer’s tool
  • “I’m in jail/hospital/in trouble” - Call the real person directly
  • “Send gift cards/Bitcoin/wire transfer” - These are untraceable
  • A stranger takes the phone - Real lawyers don’t ask for money like this

✅ What to Do Instead

IF You Get a Call Like This:

HANG UP.

Then:

  1. Call your grandchild back at the number YOU have (not the one the scammer gave)
  2. Call their parent (your child) - the scammer said not to, so DO
  3. Wait 10 minutes - real emergencies will still be there
  4. Never send money without verifying face-to-face or via video call

Create a Family CODE WORD

Do this TODAY with your family:

  1. Pick a word or phrase only your family knows
    • Example: “Red bicycle” or “Pizza Friday”
  2. If someone truly in trouble calls, ask for the code word
  3. If they don’t know it, it’s a scam

📞 If You Already Sent Money

Don’t be ashamed. These are professional criminals using advanced technology.

Do this immediately:

  1. Call your bank RIGHT NOW - 1-800 number on your card

    • Tell them it was fraud
    • They may be able to stop the transfer
  2. File a report:

    • Online: ic3.gov (FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center)
    • By phone: 1-800-CALL-FBI
    • Your local police: File a report
  3. Tell someone you trust - family member, friend, neighbor

    • Shame keeps scammers in business
    • Speaking up helps catch them
  4. Check your accounts - change passwords if you gave any information

💔 Real Story: Margaret’s Experience

“The voice was perfect. It was my grandson Jake. He said he crashed his car and needed $3,000 for bail. I wired the money immediately. When I called my daughter an hour later to check on Jake, he was at school. The whole thing was fake. The scammers used a video of Jake singing at a school concert - they copied his voice from that.”

— Margaret, 78, Arizona

Remember: Margaret isn’t foolish. She’s a victim of sophisticated criminals.

📱 How to Protect Yourself

Set Your Phone to Help:

  • Don’t answer unknown numbers - let them leave a message
  • Use caller ID apps - some identify scam calls
  • Turn on spam blocking - most phones have this built-in

Protect Your Voice Online:

  • Ask grandchildren to make social media videos private
  • Don’t share family videos publicly
  • Be careful what you post - scammers collect information

Talk to Your Family:

  • Show them this page - awareness prevents scams
  • Create the code word - do it this week
  • Make a plan - who to call if something seems wrong
